PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Immigration and Customs Enforcement is planning to purchase AI technology allowing them to scan retinas and identify people to deport.
The tech uses an app that allows agents to snap a photo of someone’s eye 10-15 feet away. Then, it will compare that photo to ones already in their system and even on social media.
The agency is under pressure from the White House to detain and deport more undocumented migrants. Right now, agents are increasingly detaining people with no lengthy criminal records. Cash from Congress is set to help hire 10,000 more agents.
Andrew Maynard is a professor of advanced technology transitions at ASU . Though he says retinal detection can be a good tool, he has concerns about whether this app is accurate.
“This idea of scanning the iri
