After an impasse, Maumee City Council tried — and failed — to privately come to a decision to appoint a new councilman.

During a special meeting Monday, council in public session narrowed the field of five candidates to replace Scott Noonan to two: Chelsea Ziss, who helped found a citizens group after the sewer inspection outrage last summer, and Daniel Thomas, who is a newcomer to politics.

Councilmen Jon Fiscus, Phil Leinbach, and Margo Puffenberger voted for Ms. Ziss. Gabe Barrow, Josh Harris, and Ted Kurt were in favor of Mr. Thomas.

Mayor Jim MacDonald said a majority of council must make a decision by next Monday’s council meeting, or it will fall to him to do so.

“I’m not going to weigh in on this. This is your seat,” Mayor MacDonald said before the 3-3 vote.
