The restaurant building of the historic Kula Lodge & Restaurant burned in a large early-morning fire in Kula, Maui, today.

Maui Fire Department officials said that at about 3:19 a.m., a renter in one of the rooms of the Upcountry Maui lodge reported seeing flames coming from the restaurant, which was closed.

MFD said firefighters arrived at 3:33 a.m. to find the restaurant at 15200 Haleakala Highway engulfed in flames. They had the fire under control at about 5:30 a.m.

Several renters from the lodge were evacuated and no injuries were reported.

Firefighters worked to keep the fire from spreading to nearby structures. MFD said this afternoon that the “mop up on the fire is slow and ongoing due to the potential structural compromise the building.”
