CHICAGO -- Spencer Torkelson banged a solo home run off the left-field foul pole in the ninth inning to break a tie and lift the Detroit Tigers to a 2-1 win over the Chicago White Sox on Monday night at Rate Field.
The Tigers (69-51) and White Sox (43-78) play two more in Chicago this week.
Torkelson’s shot came on a 1-0 fastball from lefty reliever Brandon Eistert.
Moments later, a torrential downpour soaked the field and halted play. The game was delayed for 63 minutes.
Torkelson’s homer was the Tigers’ first run since the second inning, when Riley Greene doubled and scored on Dillon Dingler’s RBI single off opener Elvis Peguero.
That was Peguero’s last batter. He gave way to left-hander Tyler Alexander, who struck out Zach McKinstry to escape the jam in the second, then worked four
