WACO, Texas — The Waco Police Department has announced that its Special Crimes Unit achieved a 90% homicide case clearance rate for 2024, compared to 58% nationally.

Special Crimes Unit Sergeant Sam Key says their clearance rate is a combination of good old-fashioned police work, teamwork and an unlikely source.

"Social media plays a very important role in what we do," Key. "There's going to be usually some type of chatter, someone talking about what they have seen. It could even be a suspect talking about what they did or didn't do, and that helps point us in the right direction."

Key emphasized how crucial a role the public can have in solving crime.
