DES MOINES, Iowa —

The Iowa State Fair has implemented new mobile barricades at its main entrances to prevent vehicles from running into visitors on crowded fairground roads, following a deadly incident in New Orleans.

"Obviously we have to be the safest place in Iowa for these 11 days," said Jeremy Parsons, CEO of the Iowa State Fair.

The decision to debut these barriers came after a driver intentionally drove into a crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans last winter, killing at least 14 and injuring dozens more.

Parsons explained that the barriers are small enough for golf carts and pedestrians to pass through, but larger vehicles are effectively stopped by the rugged system.

"So a vehicle hits that, they flip up and it high-centers the vehicle," Parsons said.
