SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - Earlier this year, the Sioux City Community School Board passed a new policy to help with the recruitment and retention of ‘hard to fill’ positions.

Monday night, the board talked about some of those positions, and how big an issue vacancies are to the district

Associate Superintendent Angela Bemus shared vacancies in Special Education positions. Bemus said, right now, there are 46 Special Education positions vacant. She said 41 of those positions are in what are considered highly challenging rooms.

Bemus believes this shortage is caused by both the difficulty of the work and the wage.

After researching other positions in the area, the district found some private sector businesses that deal with special education pay $25 an hour. The district’s starting wage is $1
