SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - A local therapist is using a unique resource to help clients who may feel stuck in traditional therapy.

Equine assisted psychotherapy is an alternative form of therapy that takes patients from the therapist’s office to the outdoors.

Prairie River Counseling partners with STARS, Inc. and uses their horses and equine specialists for sessions.

Clients and horses mutually choose each other.

“They’re extremely sensitive to their environment. They’re sensitive to the other horses and people around them. And, that’s because they have extremely strong mirror neurons,” said Simoni.

Therapist Becky Simoni says each session is based on what the client needs that day.
