PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) -- At a press conference on Monday morning, President Trump criticized the Illinois SAFE-T Act that removed cash bail.
"Every place in the country where you have no cash bail is a disaster," said Trump. "Someone murders somebody and they're out on no cash bail before the day is out."
The SAFE-T Act was an Illinois law passed in 2021 and amended in 2022. It created multiple reforms to the criminal justice system, which included the removal of cash bail and allowing more non-violent offenders to stay out of jail before their trial.
State Sen. Elgie Sims was a supporter of the SAFE-T Act when it was a bill, and supports it still as a law. He said the law has been a success in the state of Illinois.
