Reducing the number of illegal immigrants in the country has been one of the Trump administration's main goals since its first term. Now, the U.S. government is edging close to what David Bier, director of immigration studies at the CATO Institute, described as a new ‘draconian’ measure to fight illegal immigration by targeting visa overstays.

The Trump administration has launched a yearlong pilot program to implement new visa bonds for some countries. The bonds will be quite expensive and may prevent thousands of people from getting a visa for the U.S. Only two countries have been targeted by these new measures for now, but more may soon join the list.
