A student has said she was “geeking out” after uncovering a piece of 9th-century gold just 90 minutes into her first dig. ‌

Yara Souza, an archaeology student at Newcastle University, discovered the early medieval object during an excavation in Redesdale, Northumberland. ‌

The 1.5in object was buried close to the route of Dere Street on the A68, once a major Roman road running between York and Edinburgh. ‌

It was built by occupying Romans in AD79-81 and was used as a route for communications and supplies.
