Nearly 200 suspected dangerous dogs were seized by Leicestershire Police last year - the highest in the country. The majority of those seized were recently banned XL Bullies, with the RSPCA calling for a re-think on the law which made the breed illegal to possess without a special certificate in February 2024.
The figures, which cover 2024, show that Leicestershire Police seized 192 suspected dangerous dogs last year, including 177 banned XL Bullies. Dog owners regularly find themselves before Leicester's magistrates for failing to get their XL Bully registered, leaving dozens of otherwise law-abiding people with criminal records.
The RSPCA is calling on the government to rethink the Dangerous Dogs Act, arguing that the XL bully ban is "failing". The charity believes it doesn't re
