A rapidly spreading wildfire on Vancouver Island has prompted the evacuation of about 300 people from a campground and marina near Port Alberni, British Columbia. The Mount Underwood wildfire, located approximately 12 kilometers south of Port Alberni, has also caused power outages affecting more than 500 B.C. Hydro customers in the area.
The fire was first detected on Monday and expanded significantly within hours, growing from around 50 hectares at 7 p.m. PT to 630 hectares by 10 p.m. PT. Huu-ay-aht First Nations Chief Councillor John Jack, who is also the chair of the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District, described the fire's rapid growth, stating, "It grew massive." He noted that the fire has surpassed the size of the nearby Wesley Ridge fire at its peak.
As the wildfire continues to spread, the B.C. Wildfire Service has reported that it is exhibiting aggressive behavior, leading to road closures in the region. Jack mentioned that the road between Bamfield, a small community with about 300 residents, and Port Alberni is closed. He advised travelers to use the Cowichan route to access Bamfield.
Jack expressed concern about the power outage, which has been in effect since around 6 p.m. Monday. He stated, "The power is out — and it's out indefinitely. And that's perhaps the most concerning thing." In a morning update, B.C. Hydro confirmed that a crew had been assigned to address the outage, but no estimated time for restoration was provided.
Despite the fire's proximity, Jack reassured residents that there are currently no threats to Port Alberni. However, he cautioned that smoke from the fire could pose issues for the community. He recommended that residents prepare a "72-hour kit" and stay informed through verified sources.
The B.C. Wildfire Service has classified the fire as displaying Rank 4 and Rank 5 behavior, indicating it is a vigorous surface fire that is burning into the treetops. Night vision helicopters and structure protection specialists have been deployed to the area. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
This wildfire comes shortly after the Wesley Ridge fire, located northwest of Nanaimo, was downgraded from "out of control" to "being held." Currently, there are 97 active wildfires across British Columbia, marking one of the worst wildfire seasons on record.
