SOUTH BERWICK, Maine — The South Berwick Water District issued a water emergency declaration Tuesday enacting bans on outdoor water use and urging customers to reduce or conserve indoor water usage.

"Due to long-term dry conditions and continued high heat advisories, water resources are stressed to keep up with water demand," the water district said in a notice.

The water district cited moderate drought conditions since mid-2024 in their report and said some of their supplies have yet to recover from the "long-term severe drought of 2022."

According to the U.S. Drought Monitor map with the latest data from Aug. 5, South Berwick was listed under "abnormally dry" conditions, which is one level below moderate drought.
