Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) joked Tuesday that President Donald Trump might go on to serve a third term in the White House, a proposition that the president himself has entertained in the past.
Graham’s remarks came in response to a Trump social media post joking about renaming the Kennedy Center the “Trump/Kennedy Center,” echoing the president’s playful “whoops” after the proclamation.
“Look forward to hearing from 48 – whoops 47 – about who will be this year’s Trump/Kennedy Center honorees,” Graham wrote Tuesday in a social media post on X.
“I can’t wait to find out who these great Americans are. I’m all-in trying to help President Donald Trump structurally and aesthetically improve one of the greatest gems of American culture.”
Once among Trump’s fiercest critics, calling him a “jackass” in 2015, Graham has since gone on to become one of the president’s most loyal supporters. As far as endorsing Trump for a third term, Graham left the question open back in March, telling a reporter to “ask me in ‘27” about whether he thought Trump could seek the Oval Office a third time.
Trump himself has also teased an extended stay at the White House on multiple occasions. As recent in May, he told NBC News that while he “probably” wouldn’t seek a third term in office, he would “like to.” Those comments came just months after he told NBC News that he was “not joking” about seeking a third term.
Graham is not the only Republican flirting with the idea of supporting Trump for a third bid at the White House, with Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN)
filing a resolutionback in January to amend the Constitution to permit Trump to seek a third term, a proposal met with
widespread condemnationLook forward to hearing from 48 — whoops 47 —about who will be this year’s Trump/Kennedy Center honorees. I can’t wait to find out who these great Americans are.
