WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – The National Guard arrived in Washington, D.C., Tuesday after being deployed by President Donald Trump.

The White House ordered federal forces to take over the city’s police department to reduce crime according to the president.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has pledged to work with federal officials although she noted in a press conference on Monday that crime has fallen in the city. She pledged that since the city has more police, she “wants to make to make sure we use them.”

The mayor and Attorney General Pam Bondi met Tuesday morning and said on social media that the Justice Department would “work closely with the D.C. city government" to “make Washington, D.C., safe again."
