NEW YORK STATE (WWTI) - Students will be heading off to college in the next few weeks and the New York State Division of Consumer Protection is offering tips to avoid scams and deal with dorm safety.

In an announcement made earlier this week, the organization is offering targeted scam prevention and safety tips that can help them start the new academic year with stride.

The state is home of nearly 300 different higher educational institutions, which is the second-most in the country.

Students can face tough decisions and may be vulnerable to potential scams and other campus safety risks.
