NEW HARTFORD, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) -- A bat has tested positive for rabies in the Village of New Hartford, according to the Oneida County Health Department.

The bat was caught and sent to the New York State Department of Health's Wadsworth Center in Albany on Thursday, August 14. Positive results for rabies were reported to Oneida County on Friday, August 15. The Department of Health has said that one person and one pet were exposed to the rabid bat. The person received post-exposure care, while the pet was up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations.

The Health Department warned residents to keep watch of the signs of rabies, which include: • The animal acting strangely, mad, or shy, • The animal is getting unusually close • The animal is foaming or drooling from the mouth.
