California water officials issued advisories and closed popular swim areas at Silverwood Lake in San Bernardino County after detecting algal bloom conditions that the Department of Water Resources (DWR) identified as warranting caution and closure for public safety.

Why it Matters

Although blue-green alga is a natural part of the environment , they can grow rapidly under ideal conditions. Harmful algal blooms can produce toxins that pose direct risks to people and animals, especially small children and dogs, because of their smaller body size and tendency to spend time in the water.

At times, such blooms can force water managers to restrict recreational access to impacted waterways.
