WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) - A major shakeup in public safety is underway in the nation's capital.
One day after President Donald Trump took control of the D.C. police department, National Fuard troops are expected to hit the streets.
Local leaders say they're still trying to figure out how this new chain of command will work.
President Trump has put Attorney General Pam Bondi in charge of the D.C. police department. Bondi met with D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser Tuesday.
"However, we got here — right now, we have more officers, and we want to make sure we're using them effectively,” said Bowser.
D.D. Police Chief Pamela Smith says she's focused on results.
"We know we have to keep illegal guns off our streets. And if we have this enhanced presence, it's going to make our city even better,” said
