BRAINERD, Minn. — One moment, Dr. Cathy Ann Donovan was taking a peaceful walk with her dogs along U.S. Highway 169 near her home north of Onamia, Minnesota.

The next moment, Donovan’s life was taken from her in seconds by the powerful impact of a fast-moving vehicle.

The vehicle drove away and no one reported the incident. Despite an initially plausible lead, the case remains unsolved two years later.

Shortly before 4:50 p.m on Nov. 13, 2023, a woman was driving north on Highway 169 when she saw a human body on the road in front of her.

Surprised, she slammed on her brakes and swerved. Her vehicle did not crash into the body, but it hit and killed a dog standing nearby.

No vehicles that might have been responsible for the killing were in sight.
