The ownership group bringing professional soccer back to Oklahoma City has filed a trademark application for “OKC United” — a possible new name for the club formerly known as Energy FC.

In March, after seeking fan input, the OKC For Soccer initiative announced five finalists for a new name . OKC United was among them, along with OKC Bison FC, OKC Lightning FC, OKC Thunderbird FC and OKC Wind FC.

While OKC United seems like the apparent choice, the club isn’t yet ready to announce a new name.

“Our club’s brand development is ongoing,” the team said in a statement to The Oklahoman on Tuesday. “It is an extensive community-driven process. We have always wanted to ensure that the brand truly represents our amazing city and is authentic to the global game and its culture.
