Make Philly Queer Again first emerged on Instagram under a different name. The account, which features the handle @makephillyqueeragain_, was launched as Make Woody’s Queer Again in an attempt to gather LGBTQ+ people at the venue for coordinated takeovers of the space.

“It’s time for our presence to be felt, our voices to be heard and our community to be seen once again at the Gayborhood’s landmark gay bar,” Marisa, the account’s creator, posted on July 6, 2024.

She’d always had a good time at Woody’s before the Gayborhood shut down during COVID — but when the bar re-opened, she felt that the atmosphere had changed. It wasn’t about the venue itself. It was about who was gathered there.
