SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - President Donald Trump and his administration are considering reclassifying marijuana as a less dangerous drug.

The effort to change marijuana from Schedule I, which the DEA classifies as having "no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse," to Schedule III began under the Biden administration.

A Schedule III designation wouldn't nationally legalize marijuana for recreational use, but criminal penalties would be lessened. It would also open new research opportunities, and one of the biggest benefits would be that some cannabis firms would no longer be subject to Section 280E of the US federal tax code.
