KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Governor Bill Lee wants to make some changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), previously known as food stamps.

Lee is asking the United States Department of Agriculture for a federal waiver.

One change is that families would be able to buy a hot prepared meal that’s not breaded or fried.

“I really hope it’s expansive and beyond the rotisserie chicken,” Signe Anderson said. “That families are able to go to the deli counter and buy a salad or the salad bar in the grocery.”

Anderson is the Director of Nutrition Advocacy with Tennessee Justice Center (TJC), which advocates for families in need.

Anderson said she supports using SNAP for hot meals, but she’s worried about the other proposed change.
