MADISON (WKOW) -- Gov. Tony Evers has urged the Trump administration to reconsider its decision to cut $29 million in funding for Wisconsin's unemployment insurance (UI) system modernization.

The funding was crucial for enhancing the system to prevent benefit fraud and waste, Evers said in a press release.

Wisconsin's UI system, developed in the 1970s, faced significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. A surge in unemployment claims highlighted the need for modernization. Evers began these efforts with the signing of 2021 Act 4 to update the system and prevent future crises.
