County officials have been advised not to discuss plans for the Cape May County Airport in any specificity until an application is on file with the Federal Aviation Administration, county Administrator Kevin Lare said Tuesday.

But in his comments at the Board of Commissioners meeting explaining the advice from the county’s aviation council, Lare gave the county’s most direct statement so far about why the county is ending its deal with the Delaware River and Bay Authority, which ran the airport in Lower Township for decades with a $1-a-year lease with the county.

In previous public comments, board Director Len Desiderio has made reference to the potential of residential development at the airport. Lare said Tuesday that the county brought its ideas to officials at the DRBA,
