Tyler Adams, a midfielder on the U.S. men’s national soccer team, was back in Chicago for a second time this summer.
The first time was in June for the U.S. team’s camp before the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Adams, the Americans’ 2022 World Cup captain, was intent on making a statement to coach Mauricio Pochettino.
Now, in the first days of August, he was back, with Bournemouth this time, on tour in the United States and preparing for the new Premier League season. (And with his club facing Liverpool, the reigning champion, at Anfield in Friday’s curtain-raiser, it would not be long before he was facing his first significant challenge.)
That he was not only in the same city but also at the same hotel felt symbolic. It was a reminder of his approach in 2025 before the largely home World Cup next
