MINNEAPOLIS — Officials in Minnesota say the stricter DWI law will help keep more drunk drivers off the roads.

It extends what's known as, 'the look back period' from 10 to 20 years.

If a person gets a second DWI within 20 years of their first, they must install an ignition interlock system, also known as a car breathalyzer, in their car for two years.

If they have two more DWI's in that time-frame, the device must be installed for six years.

It then goes up to 10 years with three additional DWI's.

Minnesota's Director of Driver and Vehicle Services Division Pong Xion says, “When you enroll in the program, you have to follow the guidelines that are set by the program so that you can successfully graduate and then hopefully become, you know, have full driving privileges again.”
