New driving test addition could save lives as key questions introduced
Learner drivers will soon face questions on CPR in their theory tests, as the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) recognises that motorists are often "first on the scene" when someone has a cardiac arrest.
The DVSA plans to introduce queries about CPR and defibrillators into the theory test from early next year, aiming to ensure candidates "have a better understanding of the skills to use in an emergency".
In the UK, over 40,000 individuals experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest annually , with survival rates below 10%. However, research indicates that prompt CPR and defibrillator use within three to five minutes can increase survival chances to 70%.
