BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - The Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport will continue serving the Magic City for at least another half century, thanks to a decision made by the Birmingham City Council on Tuesday, August 12.
Council members voted to extend the airport’s lease through 2070, a move designed to pave the way for significant private investment and long-term growth.
Birmingham Airport Authority CEO Ronald Mathieu said the extension is tied to two major contracts the airport holds with private companies. Both companies have committed to multi-million-dollar improvements at the airport — projects that require more time than the original lease allowed.
“We have two agreements now. One with Atlantic Aviation and the other with Millionaire. Atlantic is about to put $42 mil
