The Brevard County community showed strong support for former teacher Melissa Calhoun at a school board meeting on Tuesday after her dismissal for using a student's preferred name without parental consent, a requirement under new Florida law.
Political, dishonest, and even harassment were words echoed repeatedly at the Brevard County School Board meeting, directed at board members by community supporters of Calhoun.
During Tuesday night's meeting, 29 speakers, including members of the Brevard Federation of Teachers, advocated for Calhoun's rehire at Satellite High School.
"One thing that's missing from tonight's agenda is Melissa Calhoun, a teacher with nearly flawless evaluations for 12 years," said Anthony Colucci, president of the Brevard Federation of Teachers.
