MARQUETTE — An increased amount of military activity and aircraft in the Upper Peninsula is part of planned training operations and no reason to be alarmed, officials said.
The U.S. Army will began conducting military training in and around Marquette County and the Keweenaw Peninsula. Those training operations will continue Sunday, and consist of air mobility operations and ground base close quarter battle training.
The training was announced in a post shared Sunday night by the Marquette County Sherrif’s Office Facebook page. In that post, it was stated that the local terrain provides unique training opportunities and simulates environments troops may encounter when deployed, but it was stressed that the training “is not in response to any real-world events.”
