On Aug. 13, the newly constructed, 155,000-square-foot, W.P. Grier Middle School will open its doors to students for the first time, replacing a school building that was constructed in the 1950s.

According to Grier Principal Jessica Mellon, the new building is designed to better meet the needs of modern students, honor the history lost in the removal of the former school building and consider student safety.

In the former school building, Mellon said most classrooms opened to the sidewalk or grass. There were no connecting hallways on the inside of the building, which presented a safety concern for stude
