President Donald Trump’s recent firing of Bureau of Labor Statistics Commissioner Erika McEntarfer following the agency’s publication of an abysmal jobs report is just the latest example of “Trump’s evil super power,” said journalist Garrett Graff Wednesday while speaking on CNN.

“I think certainly this is part of what is to me Donald Trump's evil superpower, which is the way that he makes us focus in on and care about minor government jobs that most Americans should never have to think about; postmaster general, (or) the person who's running the Treasury payment system,” Graff said.

“BLS is as technocratic a job as there possibly could be in the U.S. government, and it's one where much of our finance sector, much of our economy sort of runs on being able to have unimpeachable data coming out of that system. The moment we begin to undermine the possible integrity there, it's to our detriment.”

Published on Aug. 1, the latest jobs report out of the BLS saw job creation for May and June revised down by 258,000 less jobs than initially assessed, marking the lowest monthly job growth since December 2020. The report “really got under Trump’s skin” according to White House officials, who went on to fire McEntafer just hours after its publication.

Trump would go on to tap Heritage Foundation economist E.J. Antoni to lead the BLS, a pick that has drawn scrutiny over Antoni’s lack of experience in labor statistics and partisan past for a position that Graff argued should be apolitical.

Lulu Garcia-Navarro, a CNN contributor, said that in many cases, Antoni was the worst choice Trump could have made for leading the BLS, citing him as the “worst-case scenario” for those across the political spectrum.

“He is, for many people, the worst-case scenario,” Garcia-Navarro said. “He has very strong critics on the right because they see him as a partisan who really doesn't have the background, he comes from this sort of mediocre university, he hasn't published a lot of papers, he is not considered to be an economic giant if you will. And of course on the left, people see him as just highly partisan.”
