HOUSTON (CW39) – Mayor John Whitmire said he is proposing to double the city’s disaster relief funds for rebuilding damaged homes. On Tuesday, Whitmire announced a plan to adopt a council member's amendment (DR24) to allocate an additional $50 million from the city’s generator fund toward home repair efforts, bringing the total to $100 million.

The measure, which will be voted on by City Council Wednesday, comes in response to damage from recent storms. Whitmire emphasized that the generator fund was originally set aside to provide backup power for cooling centers, fire stations, police facilities, and multi-service centers during emergencies.

“This is not at the neglect of any other good cause,” Whitmire said. “It’s about balancing $314 million for the greatest good.”
