The owner of one of the dogs that mauled an 8-year-old to death in January in Volusia County has been formally charged after 7 long months.
"We don't make filing decisions based on emotion," said William Scheiner, State Attorney for the 18th judicial circuit. "We don't make filing decisions based on, public pressure or comment or because someone says we should. We make them based on the law."
State Attorney William Scheiner of Brevard and Seminole counties said the owner, Amanda Franco, is facing a second-degree misdemeanor.
He explained that the charge pertains to a dog that has not been previously classified as dangerous and causes great bodily harm or death to a human being. It is punishable by up to 60 days in jail.
Scheiner said the other dog owner was not charged.
