Fairbanks North Star Borough School District Board of Education members called a proposed policy updating the charter school application process confusing during a work session Monday night.

The board is revising the policy following the passage of House Bill 57, an education funding bill signed into law in July that permanently increased the base student allocation and included policy changes. Legislators described the policy updates as a compromise with Gov. Mike Dunleavy, who has advocated for the state — rather than local school boards — to approve new charter schools.

The district currently has five charter schools. Under the proposed policy, the administration must announce the deadline for charter school applications no later than Sept. 1 for the following school year.
