If you were outside last night keeping your eyes peeled for the Perseids meteor shower you might have gliimpsed something you didn’t expect to see.

A number of people in eastern and south-central Pennsylvania reported seeing a strange light in the sky on Tuesday evening.

Photos shared on social media and to various news organizations showed a boomerang-shaped light, with a glowing, circular center.

Alas, it wasn’t space aliens or some weirdly shaped meteor, but most likely the USSF-106 Vulcan Centaur rocket, which launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, that evening, just before 9 p.m.

According to Space.com, the rocket was carrying an experimental navigation satellite for the U.S. military. It is the first experimental navigation satellite the military has launched in 48 years.
