As new reporting continues to show inflation ticking up, with the consumer price index rising by 2.7% in July, President Donald Trump’s poll numbers on inflation have plummeted in what CNN’s Harry Enten labeled an “abject disaster for the president.”

“Into the gutter we go, underwater we go; he's 25 points underwater my goodness gracious, that is where the Little Mermaid is and he is matching the Little Mermaid, that's how far underwater he is on the issue that got him elected,” Enten said.

“He led by nine points on (inflation) last year, and now he's 25 points underwater. As I said, a complete and total disaster for the president of the United States.”

Inflation was among the key issues that helped propel Trump to the White House for a second time in 2024, but with prices on key consumer goods continuing to rise – ground beef up 2.4% in July, furniture up 0.9%, and appliances up 0.9% – voters are turning on Trump on the issue, a souring that is extending to Republican candidates across the nation.

“If Republicans in Congress think that they can escape the wrath of the voters when it comes to inflation, I have a bit of a rude awakening for them,” Enten said. “The bottom line is the wrath that the voters feel for Donald Trump on inflation is transferring over to House Republicans.”

According to Enten, the GOP led with voters on inflation by 13 points in October of 2022. Today, however, the GOP is underwater on the issue, with Democrats now leading the GOP by a single point.

“Voters in poll after poll say that Donald Trump has taken his eye off the ball, off the big issue of the day which is inflation, and that is why Donald Trump is way underwater on this issue, and it's why Democrats have caught up to Republicans on the all-important issue of inflation,” Enten said.

The issue of inflation also remains top of mind for Americans. According to new data shared by Enten, inflation was named as voters’ top issue at 34%, followed by the economy at 16%, and Medicare and Social Security at 14%.

As Trump’s numbers continue to tank on inflation, Enten warned that, outside of a major course correction, Republicans were set for major setbacks in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections.

“I can guarantee you this: if these numbers right now look like (this) on election day, 2026, there is no way in God's green earth that Republicans can hold onto the House of Representatives,” he said. “These numbers are an abject disaster for Donald Trump, and therefore, Republicans.”
