JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Jacksonville Sheriff's Office police officer shot and killed a man accused of setting a home on fire and wielding a knife on the city's Eastside Wednesday morning, police said.

Police said the shooting happened on Buckman Street and 25th Street. Just after 7 a.m., officers initially responded to a report of a mentally ill man, but the call was updated after police said the suspect set a neighbor's home on fire. Police said the man's mother had called police.

The suspect tried setting the fire at two different locations of the home, police said. The homeowners then came out and the suspect fled. Police said the fire was extinguished, and there was no serious damage.
