LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A woman is dead after a shooting Wednesday morning near a JCPS elementary school.

At about 8 a.m., Louisville Metro police responded to a shooting at 10th and Chestnut streets, near Coleridge-Taylor Elementary School, according to an LMPD news release.

Coleridge-Taylor Elementary was under a brief lockdown but has since reopened.

"Kids should be able to go to school, go to the bus stop in the morning without any fear of gun violence, of having to run for their life in the morning. It's absolutely unacceptable that these types of incidents have happened, now twice in the last week," LMPD Chief Paul Humphrey said.

Humphrey said police were patrolling the area each morning since last week's incident. However Wednesday was the first day officers were not present.
