Ever tried to cross North Arthur Ashe Boulevard on foot?

Jeremy Hoffman, a Scott’s Addition resident and avid fan of alternate transportation, has done so on plenty of occasions. It’s an experience he said can be “quite frightening” — even with the pedestrian right-of-way.

“Sometimes, distracted drivers run those stoplights at pretty high speeds,” Hoffman said. “Anywhere there are large stretches of very wide road, that encourages drivers to speed.”

Speed data collected and compiled by the city bears that out.

Last month, city officials announced that they’d partnered with Urban SDK: a geospatial artificial intelligence service vendor that used a combination of GPS data and satellite systems to track two months’ worth of speed data for Richmond roads.
