Film icon Miriam Margolyes has revealed why the owners of a Glasgow householder slammed the door in her face when she once came knocking.

The 84-year-old, known for her roles in Blackadder and Harry Potter, is beloved by fans for her no-nonsense attitude and often hilarious honesty. In a new interview with the BBC, she discussed her roots as she appeared at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Miriam, who was born in Oxford in 1941, explains that her Merchant Navy dad, a doctor, grew up in the Gorbals . Slipping back into his accent, she says that her father was born in the slums in 1899, after his father came to the city in the 1870s.
