The provincial government and Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador have issued a joint call for the federal government to do everything in its power to prevent strike action at Air Canada.

Flight attendants with the carrier have issued a strike notice and Air Canada has already cancelled some flights in anticipation of a potential labour disruption.

Flight cancelations may begin as early as Friday.

Saturday is switchover day for athletes competing in the 2025 Canada Summer Games in St. John’s.

The joint statement urges the federal government to do what it can to prevent strike action and flight disruptions.

The tourism and hospitality sector contributes about $1.4 billion to the local economy each year, and Air Canada accounts for about 50 per cent of the 6,000 airline seat capacity
