Police arrested a man suspected of fatally shooting a woman at an extended-stay motel in Gilbert.

Gilbert police received multiple calls just before 6 p.m. on Aug. 12 reporting gunshots in a motel parking lot near Arizona Avenue and Guadalupe Road , officials said.

Officers arrived and discovered a woman with gunshot wounds. The victim was taken to a hospital, where she later died, police said.

According to police, by the time officers arrived, the male suspect had retreated into his motel room and barricaded himself inside.

Gilbert officers from the Special Assignment Unit established communication with the man, and about 30 minutes later, he voluntarily left the room and was taken into custody without incident, police said.
