BURLINGTON, Colo. — The 3-year-old daughter of Burlington Police Chief Nathan Hill died after she was attacked by a law enforcement K-9 at the family’s home, according to the Kit Carson Sheriff's Office.

Kit Carson Sheriff Travis Beldon said they found the child unresponsive in the backyard with her mother. The dog was not actively attacking upon arrival and was secure in a kennel, Beldon said.

Emergency medical personnel took the child to Kit Carson County Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Chief Hill was not home when the attack occurred.

The dog was taken from the home to the Burlington dog pound and euthanized. It was a German shepherd named Draco, which had been a single-purpose narcotics detection K-9 for the Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office, but was non-active at t
