The man killed in a police shooting after an hourslong standoff in Keene, New Hampshire , on Tuesday has been identified as prosecutors share more information on what led to his death.

David Ward, a 57-year-old from Keene, was fatally shot inside the car he'd been driving, while faced with a state police SWAT team, the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office said. Five troopers opened fire; it wasn't immediately clear what led to the shooting.

The incident began when Keene police stopped Ward's car — prosecutors didn't say why — and a woman inside got out. Prosecutors said Ward refused to get rid of a gun that officers saw him with and get out of the vehicle.
