The Oregon Health Authority has issued an advisory to warn of a harmful algal bloom in and around the Willamette River’s Ross Island lagoon .

The bloom carrying blue-green cyanobacteria — a perennial summer problem — has spread from the lagoon to near the Ross Island Bridge, south of downtown Portland.

The Oregon Health Authority recommends staying out of the water near the bloom and keeping children or pets away.

The toxins can cause health problems if inhaled or ingested and can be deadly for dogs . Symptoms include headaches, cramps, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, dizziness and fever, according to the health authority. They generally begin within 24 hours and last 72 hours.
