NEW BRUNSWICK – The 68-year-old woman who was shot and killed by a New Brunswick police officer after authorities said she was walking around the halls of her apartment building with a knife was a mother of three who worked as a bus driver before retiring.

Deborah (McCalla) Terrell is remembered by her family as a “homebody” who enjoyed the company of people, despite challenges with her mental health.

“She was outgoing and fun-loving, but she had mental issues,” said Tormel Pittman, her nephew. “She did have some mental issues, but she was always outgoing. She was a conversationalist. Put it this way, when you would talk to her, you would say, ‘She’s the perfect person to babysit your children.’ She was a grandmotherly, auntly type of person. A beautiful person, very into family.”
